Racehorse Lecture

Rachael Honeyball, who along with her husband Anthony trains at Potwell Farm near Mosterton, gave a fascinating insight into how to make a racehorse recently. This included a behind-the-scenes look at preparing horses on the gallops and tending to their needs – and the children loved trying on the jockey silks and having a go on exercise horse! Many thanks, Rachael, and good luck to you and all at Anthony Honeyball Racing for the forthcoming meets.

Scholarship Success

Congratulations to Nia, Sebastian and Kevin on their scholarship success. Nia has been awarded a Sport Scholarship and Kevin a Headmaster’s Award to Taunton School, while Sebastian has been awarded a Music Scholarship to King’s Bruton. Well done to you all and thoroughly deserved. The trio join Harry, who has been awarded a Sport Scholarship to Blundell’s School, Ronnie, who has been awarded a Sport Scholarship to King’s Bruton, and Lucy and Sophie, who have been awarded Sports Exhibitions to King’s Bruton. Good luck to those pupils who are yet to hear about or sit their scholarship exams – exciting times ahead!

Careers Talk

Photographer Giles Edwards gave a fascinating talk about his career to Years 7 and 8 recently. Inspired as a child by the work of war photo journalist Don McCullin, he spoke passionately about his approach and what makes a good photograph. He showed a selection of his landscape and street photographs and urged the children to experiment with their cameras and explore the range of settings they have at their disposal. We are pleased to announce that Giles will be judging our Spring photography competition at the end of term.

Year 5 at Youth Speaks

Many congratulations to our Year 5s for their maiden performance in last week’s Rotary Club ‘Youth Speaks’ public speaking competition in Ilminster. The children did themselves proud either chairing, speaking or proposing a range of topical subjects including pollution, endangered animals and fossil fuels. Well done, team.

Heads of School

We are extremely proud to introduce our Head Boy, Anton, Head Girl, Lucy, and Prefects for this term. The team are fixed up and looking sharp ahead of their Prefects’ Tea in the Headmaster’s Study this week – and will be out in force representing the school on Friday’s Open Morning. We wish them all the best of luck as they lead the school by example this term; our younger pupils are lucky to have such wonderful role models to look up to.

Ceramics Workshops

Mrs Palmer hosted the second series of ceramics workshops for Years 3-8 over the Christmas holidays, with the children learning new techniques such as pinching, coiling and extruding, before firing in the kiln. Their work is now proudly on display in the Grundy Hall, including Katya’s folk-inspired wall hanging and Levi’s experimental glazing using coloured slips. Many thanks to Mrs Palmer and to our amazing Friends of Perrott Hill, whose hard work last year enabled the art department to buy the kiln. This term’s double ceramics session as part of our extra-curricular programme is packed out, so it was money well spent!

Pre-Prep Pirates

Ahoy, me hearties! Our EYFS children are following the theme of pirates in their curriculum work this term, with lots of treasure to dig for and language to learn. The classrooms even have their own pirate ships… Thanks to our amazing Pre-Prep staff for the inspiration. If you’d like to come and see for yourself what makes our Pre-Prep so special, please book into one of our Open Mornings, which take place in January, May and October.

OPH Football Match

During the holidays, we welcomed some OPHs back to school for a game of football, followed by a meal at The Winyard’s Gap. Between them, they now attend Harrow, Radley, King’s Bruton, Queen’s College Taunton, Marlborough and Millfield – but this is where it all started! It was great to have you back, boys.
