Pupils’ Party Pieces

Our informal concerts (aka Pupils’ Party Pieces) have been continuing remotely during lockdown, with Mr Shortman likening them to being sat around the piano at home, enjoying each other’s music. From Hugo’s rendition of Rigadoon on the flute to Grace’s incredible performance of Satisfied from Hamilton, it was great to see such talent, enthusiasm and camaraderie between pupils on Wednesday evening. These weekly concerts are open to any pupil in Years 3-8 who wants to perform but be quick – next week’s is booked up already!

Years 3-8 Lecture

Many thanks to old Radleian, Ben Robinson, who delivered a fascinating lecture to Years 3-8 last week about his expedition along the length of Africa from Morocco to Cape Town. Ben, an engineering graduate, covered over 50,000 kilometres in a journey that spanned no fewer than eighteen countries. Thanks, Ben, for an engaging and insightful talk!

Virtual Prep School Fixture

Monday saw the launch of this week’s Inter-Prep School Fixture on Strava. Run by King’s College Taunton, the idea is to bring together the prep school sporting communities at Perrott Hill, King’s Hall and All Hallows – and it’s open to all staff, pupils and parents. All Hallows have taken an early lead averaging 8.22km per participant, we are marginally behind on 8.1km and King’s Hall are on 7.1km average. It’s all to play for though and we’re looking forward to getting some more miles on the clock!

Year 8 Debate

Royalists can sleep a little easier in their beds following the outcome of last week’s inaugural virtual debate. Tommy, Florence and Fred’s proposition that the monarchy be abolished was narrowly defeated by their opponents Grace, Tin and Ben in a hotly contested debate. Many congratulations to our speakers who all spoke fluently and persuasively and to chairman George who did an excellent job of keeping the proceedings on track. Last, but by no means least, a big thank you to Mrs Byrne who helped the children prepare their speeches.

Scholarship Success

Scholarship season is in full swing and we are delighted to share the news that seven of our senior pupils – Otis, Levi, Annabel, Grace, Ashtyn, Tommy and Erica – have been awarded scholarships and awards to King’s Bruton. Very well done to you all and good luck to those pupils yet to sit their exams!

Perrott Radio

We took over the airwaves on Thursday for our very first Perrott radio show, superbly hosted by Mr Renyard and Mrs Smith from Welly Radio at Wellington School. The show opened with ‘I want to break free’ by Queen (an inspired choice from the Headmaster) and we were let into a little secret afterwards – that Mrs Smith was a dancer in the original video! That’s what we call hidden talent… The show was so popular that we couldn’t fit all the song requests and messages in, so tune in tomorrow (Tuesday) when we’ll be back from 1700-1800. All OPHs, friends and families are very welcome to join us so get in touch if you’d like the link – song requests and shout outs are very much welcomed too!

Following the tour, parents will be given the opportunity to have 1-1 calls with our Headmaster and senior staff. OPH Lecture on Neuroscience

Upper Prep pupils delved into the world of neuroscience last week, courtesy of OPH Harvey Walsh. Harvey, who left Perrott Hill in 2010 and went onto King’s College Taunton before undertaking a BSc and MSc at the University of Birmingham, spoke to senior pupils about his fascinating research into the human brain. Harvey is now at home in Haselbury Plucknett until he can fly out to New Zealand, where he has secured funding to complete a PhD in Neurovascular Physiology at the University of Auckland. It was a highly engaging and motivating talk which sparked lots of great questions from the floor. Thank you, Harvey – we’d love to hear more soon!

Top Marks in English

Well done to our Year 5 pupils, who have garnered significant praise for their English work this term. Not only have they impressed Mr Silk with their writing of riddles, but Mrs Byrne reports that, over the Christmas holidays, they collectively passed more AR quizzes than any other year group in school. Special mention goes to Horatio with 9, Florence with 8 and Charlie with 6. Excellent work and a big thumbs up from Madame Brooks!

House Olympics

The first House Olympics challenge of the year was a corker, with pupils well and truly taking Mr McCullough’s advice to ‘be creative’ on board. The challenge, set by Mrs Layfield to spread some joy during this first week back, was to dress your pet or teddy in a funny costume – and we are howling at some of the hilarious entries (head to our Facebook page to see them all). It was a very close call but the winning entry goes to Rosie and Jessica, who dressed a very compliant George in their school uniform. Congratulations to you both, and to Mendips! There are House Points for everyone who submitted an entry so well done to you all and we’ll reveal the tally as term goes on…
