The 80th anniversary of Victory in Europe (VE) Day provided the perfect opportunity for us to explore what life was like in Britain during the war, especially for women and children, and how people celebrated when World War II ended in Europe.
The children have learnt about rationing, black-outs and Operation Pied Piper, where children were evacuated to the countryside. It was interesting for them to imagine what it must have felt like to leave home with a small suitcase and a gas mask, not knowing when you’d see your family again.
To bring the past to life, we also enjoyed a special 1940s-style lunch: Homity Pie, tinned fruit, and evaporated milk. A delicious way for us to step into the shoes of those who lived through the war, and understand the strength, resilience, and creativity they had to show – even in the kitchen!
We also have to thank our Perrott Hill families who contributed stories and artefacts for us to display on a ‘Wall Of Remembrance’, to honour relatives who gave their service both at home and abroad World War II. A fascinating display, telling personal stories, which has really helped us to bring history to life for the children here.
